In an aim to brighten up the playground we have been painting some new murals. We have one large one done by some volunteer artists and a whole section done by the kids. We allotted each child their own space and told them they could paint anything they liked as long as they took their time and drew a pencil design first.
As we were buying outdoor paints we just had a few colours; white, black, red, blue and yellow. As I have mentioned before, art is not taught in schools here, so the idea of mixing colours was new to a lot of the children. They had a great time watching and learning as I made different new colours, some of them were really quite amazed. They then got to experiment themselves, sometimes successfully and sometimes not (we had a few sections turn blacker and blacker as more paint was added…these were painted white again and the children given another shot). Sadly, as you can imagine, when giving children access to paint and a free pass to paint the walls, spare time to take photos was thin on the ground!
It took us a long time to get it all done (even the younger ones got to have a go at hand printing), and it was a pretty messy process, but the end result was well worth it. It is nice to give each of the children a chance to leave a mark on the place.
